6-12 Computer Science Teacher
James Cunningham is an award-winning educator and a passionate advocate for computer science education. He teaches at Wind River and holds a Master’s degree in Special Education, with over a decade of experience teaching computer science. James is dedicated to preparing students for 21st-century careers, blending hands-on learning with real-world applications. His efforts have earned him recognition as the 2023 Amazon Teacher of the Year and Fremont County School District #6 Teacher of the Year. Since 2018, James has also been a Code.org Computer Science Discoveries and Fundamentals facilitator, helping other teachers bring computer science into their classrooms.
Beyond teaching, James is a committed coach, mentoring students in football, wrestling, track, and robotics. He’s especially proud of his work with middle school girls' wrestling, advocating for inclusive athletic opportunities. Always eager to grow, James is diving into cybersecurity to create new opportunities for underrepresented students in his rural community.
Outside of work, James enjoys time with his wife, two married daughters, and his two grandchildren—a grandson and a granddaughter. He’s an outdoor enthusiast who loves hiking and fishing in Wyoming’s beautiful landscapes. James believes in education as a gateway to opportunity and is driven to inspire his students to dream big and reach their potential.
